What the law actually requires

Queensland's smoke alarm rules rolled out in stages. The final stage lands on 1 January 2027 and applies to every owner-occupied home. To comply, your alarms must be: Photoele

Older alarms that were legal for years may now be non-compliant

Photoelectric

Older ionisation alarms no longer comply — regardless of age or condition.

Interconnected

When one alarm sounds, they all sound — so everyone is warned, wherever they are in the house.

Hardwired or 10-year battery

Mains-powered (installed by a licensed electrician) or a sealed, non-removable 10-year battery.

In every bedroom & hallway

In each bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms, and on every level of the home.

Rental properties have had to comply since 2022 — and as the 2027 deadline nears, installers expect a rush with longer wait times and rising prices. Sorting it now avoids the scramble.

Common questions

Smoke alarm compliance, answered

Does the 2027 deadline apply to my home?

If you own and live in your home, you must comply by 1 January 2027. If your property is rented or being sold, compliance has been required since 2022. Either way, we can check exactly what your home needs.

What kind of alarms do I actually need?

Photoelectric, interconnected alarms — either hardwired to mains power (installed by a licensed electrician) or fitted with a sealed 10-year battery — in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms, and on each level of the home.

Do I legally need an electrician?

Hardwired alarms must be installed by a licensed electrician. We position and interconnect everything to standard and provide a compliance certificate — so it is done properly and documented.

How much does it cost?

Your on-site check and quote are completely free. The install is a fixed price based on the number of alarms your home needs — confirmed upfront before any work starts. [Whole-home compliance typically starts from $XXX.]

How long does it take?

Most homes are assessed, installed and certified in a single visit. We aim to book you in within [the same week].

What areas do you cover?

All of Moreton Bay — including Caboolture, Morayfield, Burpengary, North Lakes, Mango Hill, Narangba, Bribie Island, Beachmere, Deception Bay and Woodford.
